Gum disease is a progressive condition that affects the gum tissue and supporting bones. It starts with inflammation and swelling in the gums and can lead to infection, loss of gum tissue, and even tooth loss if left untreated. It has also been linked to other health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
During a periodontal exam, your dental hygienist will thoroughly examine your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. They will check for signs of gum disease, such as redness, swelling, bleeding, and pockets around the teeth. They may also use diagnostic tools, such as X-rays, to get a better understanding of the extent of the condition and to plan appropriate treatment.
Treatment for gum disease may include scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning process that removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. This helps to reduce inflammation and promote healing of the gum tissue. In more advanced cases, surgery may be necessary to remove diseased gum tissue and to reshape and contour the gums.
It is recommended that adults have a periodontal exam at least once a year, or more frequently if they have a history of gum disease or other risk factors. This is especially important for individuals who smoke, have uncontrolled diabetes, or have a family history of gum disease. At Practice 32 we will do this exam at every appointment because we know how important it is to catch disease early.
