Oral Cancer Screening: A Vital Part of Your Dental Hygiene Visit

When you visit Practice 32 in Colorado Springs for your regular dental hygiene appointment, your hygienist does much more than just clean your teeth. A critical component of our preventive care philosophy is performing a thorough oral cancer screening. Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes, making this screening potentially life-saving.

What is an Oral Cancer Screening?

It’s a systematic visual and tactile examination of your mouth and surrounding areas to look for any signs of precancerous conditions or early-stage cancer. This includes checking:

  • Lips (inside and out)
  • Lining of the cheeks
  • Gums
  • Tongue (top, bottom, and sides)
  • Floor of the mouth (under the tongue)
  • Roof of the mouth (palate)
  • Throat area visible at the back of the mouth
  • Face and neck (checking for lumps or swelling)

Your hygienist is looking for abnormalities like sores that don’t heal (typically within 2 weeks), white or red patches, lumps, thickening tissues, persistent soreness, or difficulty chewing/swallowing.

Why is Screening So Important?

Oral cancer can often be treated successfully if caught early. Unfortunately, many oral cancers are not detected until later stages, making treatment more difficult and reducing survival rates. Regular screenings allow dental professionals to identify suspicious areas often before the patient notices any symptoms themselves.

Risk Factors for Oral Cancer

While oral cancer can affect anyone, certain factors increase the risk:

  • Tobacco Use: Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or using smokeless tobacco significantly increases risk.
  • Heavy Alcohol Consumption: Especially when combined with tobacco use.
  • HPV Infection: Certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV-16, are increasingly linked to cancers in the back of the throat (oropharynx).
  • Excessive Sun Exposure: Increases risk for lip cancer.
  • Age: Risk increases with age, particularly over 55.
  • Gender: Men are historically diagnosed more often than women.
  • Poor Diet/Nutrition: May play a role.

However, it’s crucial to remember that a significant percentage of oral cancers occur in people with no known risk factors, highlighting the importance of universal screening.

What Happens if Something Suspicious is Found?

Your dental hygienist at Practice 32 is trained to *observe* potentially abnormal areas. We do not provide a diagnosis. If something suspicious is noted during your screening:

  • We will discuss our findings with you clearly and calmly.
  • We will recommend a prompt follow-up appointment for evaluation and diagnosis.
  • This follow-up will typically be with a general dentist, an oral surgeon, or another specialist within a qualified dental practice or medical facility. They can perform further tests, such as a biopsy, if needed.

Early referral from our dental hygiene practice to the appropriate diagnostic professional is key.

This was the most pleasant and relaxing dental cleaning that I’ve ever had. Olivia was patient and kind, and explained the process and the equipment. I found it both interesting and informative! I appreciate that she was also able to take X-rays, which can be sent to my new dentist. Olivia will be my hygienist from here on out. Thank you!
