Dental Sealants: An Extra Layer of Protection Against Cavities

Cavities are a common dental problem, especially on the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). These surfaces have tiny grooves and pits (fissures) where food particles and bacteria can easily get trapped, leading to decay. Fortunately, dental sealants offer a simple, effective, and painless way to protect these vulnerable areas. At Practice 32 in Colorado Springs, our dental hygienists routinely apply sealants as a key preventive measure.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating (typically made of plastic or other dental materials) that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth. It flows into the deep grooves and pits, effectively “sealing” them off. This creates a smooth surface that is easier to clean and acts as a physical barrier, preventing food and bacteria from getting stuck and causing cavities.

Who Can Benefit from Sealants?

Sealants are most commonly recommended for children and teenagers shortly after their permanent molars and premolars erupt (usually between ages 6 and 14). This is when teeth are most susceptible to decay.

However, **adults** without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants, especially those prone to cavities or with particularly deep grooves.

The Sealant Application Process (Performed by Your Hygienist)

Applying sealants is a quick and straightforward procedure typically performed by your dental hygienist at Practice 32:

  1. Cleaning: The tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned and dried.
  2. Etching: A special gel is applied for a few seconds to slightly roughen the tooth surface, helping the sealant bond strongly.
  3. Rinsing & Drying: The tooth is rinsed and dried again.
  4. Application: The liquid sealant material is painted onto the grooves of the tooth.
  5. Curing: A special blue light is used to harden (cure) the sealant, making it a durable protective layer.

The entire process takes only a few minutes per tooth, and there is no drilling or discomfort involved.

Sealants vs. Fillings: The Preventive Advantage

Sealants are a purely preventive measure applied to healthy teeth to *stop* decay before it starts. Fillings, on the other hand, are a restorative treatment performed by a dentist at a dental office to repair a tooth *after* decay has already occurred and damaged the tooth structure. By preventing decay with sealants, you can often avoid the need for fillings and more extensive dental work later on, saving time, discomfort, and expense. While we don’t place fillings at Practice 32, applying sealants is a core preventive service we offer.

This was the most pleasant and relaxing dental cleaning that I’ve ever had. Olivia was patient and kind, and explained the process and the equipment. I found it both interesting and informative! I appreciate that she was also able to take X-rays, which can be sent to my new dentist. Olivia will be my hygienist from here on out. Thank you!
